Welcombe Coastal Barn is located 4 miles from the A39 between Bideford and Bude off the Elmscott turn off. Follow the directions below and / or take a look at a large scale map below.
Directions
Leave the M5 to Exeter at Junction 27 signposted Barnstaple.
Join the A39 signposted Bideford & Bude at the Barnstaple roundabout.
Follow the A39 from BIDEFORD through Horns Cross and Bucks Cross towards Hartland.
Continue on the main road past several signs for CLOVELLY and HARTLAND when you will begin the climb up to BURSDON MOOR. At the very top of the hill there is a signpost to the right for ELMSCOTT. There is also a brown Youth Hostel signpost here. (If you drive past the West Country Inn on your left you will have overshot the turning by about 50 yards).
This is a sharp right turn onto the Moor and you will drive over a cattle grid before taking the first left - signposted ELMSCOTT and LUTSFORD - along the top of the moorland, over a second cattle grid before a further 50 yards to Lutsford Farm.
DO NOT CONTINUE TO TAKE THE RIGHT HAND BEND BUT DRIVE STRAIGHT AHEAD passing a signpost marked WEMBSWORTHY and PUTSHOLE on the left.
You will now be driving along the top of the valley for about 3 miles towards the sea - first past HIGHER and then LOWER WEMBSWORTHY FARMs, then a bungalow on your right called WESTERING SUN and then a few yards on the entrance to PUTSHOLE FARM (not signposted) on the right (see detailed map).
After approx 200 yards you will see a small crossroads sign. Continue on over this crossroads and you will immediately drive through a metal farm gate with a fenced off area on the right. Ahead of you there is a sign to CRANHAM FARM showing a dead-end . Continue on what is now an unmade track (drive slowly here - it is only for 500 yards) - passing CRANHAM FARM on your left.
After 20 yards or so you will come to the entrance gate to a pink painted house. This is where we live in CRANHAM HOUSE & WELCOMBE COASTAL BARN. Please shut the gate before driving down the track to a hard standing alongside the stone wall of the Barn where you park your car.
If you then come to the main house we can then escort you to the Barn and show you around and make you welcome.
Walking to Welcombe Coastal Barn from the South West Coast Path at Welcombe Mouth
Take the track from the beach and walk through the floor of the valley to the first crossroads. Keeping to the left, follow the road round, past Strawberry Water, until you reach the junction signposted "Watergap". Turn right, walk over the bridge and after only a few feet take the public footpath marked on your left. You will pass through a gate with a high stone garden wall on your right and enter woodland. Proceed up the track ignoring the yellow arrow footpath sign on the steps half way up. Continue through the wood until you reach a small wooden gate at the top. Go through the gate and the back of the house is to your right.
